What a whirlwind my trip was! I have come back physically exhausted from all the walking but so creatively inspired by everything I saw at Maison et Objet in Paris and Focus 25 in London. It was wonderful to see the new collections of many of the brands I use in the studio but also make connections with new suppliers and showrooms. Overall, there was so much to take in but I have rounded up my Top 5 Design Trends in both cities.
1. Colour
It was so refreshing to see colour used with such confidence. On furniture, lampbases, doorways, and walls, colour was everywhere.Â
Deep reds and burgundy tones were definitely on trend and seen in many of the showrooms.
2. High Gloss
Following on from the fabulous use of colour, was the high gloss finish on many homewares and furnishings. This look brings in that extra layer of glamour and luxe.
I particularly loved the pink front door at Dear Jackie where we stopped for dinner one night. What a statement!
3. Pleated Lampshades
Lighting was huge and lamps were really having their moment in glory. I saw so many statement lamps and there wasn’t a plain shade in sight.
Whether on a plain or coloured base, the shade really elevates the lamp.
The pleats and pattern were even applied to pendant lights.
4. Wicker & Rattan
It was great to see many rattan furniture and decor pieces amongst all the pattern and colour. I always love using this element in my decorating projects. It adds warmth and texture and relaxes a space.
Rattan bedsides in the cutest pink colour.
5. Tassels & Fringing
It’s all in the details so they say and this was evident everywhere. Lampshades, cushions and furniture were adorned with fringes, tassels and pom poms, adding texture and interest. Like the jewellery in an outfit, this embellishment elevates the overall look.
One of my favourite displays was the GP & Baker showroom at the London Design Centre. I could have sat in this room for ages. It seemed to capture all of these ‘trends’ in the one space while still feeling timeless. Deep red accents, furniture painted in a high gloss finish, pleated shades, a rattan chair and fringing to the cushions.
