It’s no secret I love feature lighting. Whether it be a large pendant or beautiful wall light, lighting is like the jewellery of the home. It is one aspect of a build or renovation where I advise my clients to allocate some budget. The perfect light can make such a difference during the day as a focal point of a room and for adding ambience at night. There are so many gorgeous options available across a range of pricepoints and it can be tricky to know where in the home to position a feature piece. Here are My Favourite Places To Use Feature Lighting At Home.
Entrance Hallway:
Pendants in a hallway set the scene of the home and can help create a warm and welcoming first impression.
In hallways I prefer to select pendants with a glass element that are less ‘visually heavy’, especially if there is more than one.

If the ceiling height is too low for a hanging pendant, a beautiful flush mount can be equally as impressive.

Master Bedroom:
These are one of my favourite rooms to decorate. I believe the Master Bedroom should feel like your sanctuary and is definitely worthy of it’s own feature pendant. I always consider the size and proportion of the fitting in relation to the room’s dimensions.

Again, if the ceiling height is too low for a hanging light, a flush mount is a great alternative.

Kitchen Island:
Pendants above an island bench not only create ambient lighting, they can add a real ‘wow’ factor to any kitchen. The dimensions of the island bench and height of ceiling also need to be taken into account when selecting the pendant to ensure the proportion works.

Powder Rooms:
This is another space where you can have some fun with decorating and adding some personality. In my powder room below, I love the ambience the wall lights provide at night, especially against the backdrop of patterned wallpaper.

Bathrooms:
A simple feature pendant can elevate the overall look of a bathroom. It is important to consider that any lighting fixture hanging near a water source such as a bath needs to comply with building regulations.

In Australia, a 240V light fixture above a bath needs to hang no lower than 2.5m from the floor. The pendant in my bathroom below is at exactly this height.

Hallways:
A row of wall lights can add interest to a hallway and also provide soft lighting at night.

Above A Fireplace:
Two wall lights framing a fireplace create a classic and elegant look.

Nooks:
A carefully considered nook such as a window seat can add interest to a space that might otherwise be overlooked or seen as a ‘void’. Adding a wall light enhances the overall look.
