I was excited to provide my input for Australian Outdoor Living’s recently launched ebook, The Ultimate Guide To Outdoor Living in Victoria.
Having lived in Melbourne for most of my life, there are some annual events that stand out in our outdoor entertaining calendar. Typically Melbourne Cup Day, the AFL Grand Final and Australia Day are a great excuse to catch up with friends for some outdoor entertaining. In recent times, the space designated for outdoor entertaining has become an extension of the indoor living area. Here are my tips for creating the ultimate outdoor entertaining space.
1. Shade
It’s a given but no one wants to sit outside and fry in the sun. A covered porch or al fresco area is ideal to protect from the elements.

If a covered space is not possible, an awning or large portable umbrella can do the trick.
2. Comfortable Seating
Needless to say, a comfortable lounge or armchairs will encourage guests to relax and linger longer. Consider using Outdoor fabrics that are fade resistant and more durable. There are so many colour and pattern options available.
Don’t skimp on the cushions either! Also available in a wide range of outdoor fabrics, they add to the comfort factor and inject some personality. I love the unexpected pink in the image below.

3. Outdoor Rug
As with the indoors, a rug specifically designed for outdoor use can define the space and add colour.

4. Heat Source
Particularly in Melbourne, the weather can be changeable. To extend the amount of time you can use your outdoor space, consider a source of heat. An open fire is a real luxury.

5. Outdoor Lighting
Lighting can be a feature in an outdoor entertaining zone. It also helps create a beautiful ambience at night. Consider using lanterns or candles to set the scene.
