In the meantime, I often get asked by clients How to Choose the Right Barstools. Most kitchen renovations are focussed on creating a communal gathering space for friends and family. This usually includes the addition of an island bench or space which allows for barstools. Here are some of my tips on selecting the right option.
1. Size
It is important to work out the ideal dimensions of the barstool. To calculate the best seat height that allows adequate leg room, I work out the height to the underside of the bench and deduct 20-30cm. For example, if this measurement is 90cm, the ideal seat height is 60-70cm.
The width of the barstool is also important in determining how many barstools can fit. As a guide, a gap of at least 15cm between the stools allows adequate space between them to comfortably move them in and out.
2. Practical Details
A key question I ask a client is whether they prefer a back or no back. A barstool without a back can usually tuck under the bench and not be such a prominent feature in the kitchen space.
While other clients prefer the support of a back as they are keen to spend longer periods sitting at the island bench.
Words such as ‘family friendly’ and ‘easy to clean’ are often in my brief from clients when selecting barstools. If it is upholstered, I love to use outdoor fabrics that are practical, yet still soft and pretty.
Or a faux leather is easy to wipe.
3. Aesthetic
The choice of barstool is dependant on the overall kitchen style and design. I consider elements such the materials used for the finishes and general colours . In this Hamptons inspired kitchen, rattan counter stools met the brief.
For a coastal kitchen a woven white stool adds to the fresh and casual feel.
While in this luxe family kitchen, a navy faux leather stool with brass accents complements the overall look.

4. Budget
I have listed budget last on my list but it usually the first thing I gauge with the client. There are so many barstool options available that it is easy to find something that ticks all the boxes above.
