I have recently had a run of clients asking for advice on how to fill a blank wall space in their home. Many of them have been staring at a white expanse for ages, unsure of what to fill it with and scared to commit. My answer generally depends on the size to be filled and what else is going on in the room. For those out there in the same predicament here are my 8 Ways To Decorate A Blank Wall.
1. Artwork
This is usually my first suggestion and no doubt the most obvious. Art is a great way to add colour and personality to a room and doesn’t need to be expensive (here are my Top 8 Etsy Art Print Shops). But art is also very personal. If the client is looking for an original piece by an Australian artist, I direct them to Manyung Gallery. They have an extensive online gallery and wide collection of different styles. Greenhouse Interiors are another supplier that I love for beautiful pieces by local artists.
Artwork can brighten a space.
And be the piece that ties together a colour palette.
2. Gallery Wall
I have shared tips for creating a gallery wall before. It is an interesting and fun way to fill a space. You can display personal photos or create an eclectic collage of prints and artwork. I recommend West Elm for their great range of picture frames.
3. Framed Object
I love the idea of framing an unexpected object such as a flag or beautiful silk scarf (that might be otherwise tucked away in a drawer!). It adds a textural element to the room.

4. Mirror
Another more obvious option for filling a blank wall is a mirror. My preference is usually a round one to break up all the symmetrical lines that are often in a room. Always consider what will be reflected, natural light and a garden aspect are ideal. Here is a previous post on 10 Tips For Decorating With Mirrors.
5. Add a Shelf
To create more dimension and flexibility in what you would like to display, consider installing a shelf. Check out these gorgeous ledge and shelf options by Willow and Wood.
This style of floating shelf is available from Ikea.
6. Ceramic Plates
Ceramic plates with a similar theme or colour are the perfect filler for a small wall space.
I love my Kate Spade Tidbit plates in our beach house. They were too pretty to keep hidden away in the cupboard!
7. Textured Accessories
Sometimes a textured accessory is the perfect solution. Juju Hats have more recently become a popular decorating item. They are made from dyed feathers and symbolise prosperity, freedom and beauty. They also have the added bonus of not ‘competing’ with other artwork within the same room (when you are faced with the dilemma of two blank walls!).
Woven trays and baskets grouped together are an interesting display. For some colourful options, try Souk and Co.
8. Commit To Wallpaper
My final idea is one that is close to my heart. A couple of weeks ago I gave you a sneak peek of the wallpaper that was being installed in our new build. I can now reveal where…….the blank wall at the end of our Butler’s Pantry (below) was crying out for some colour. I see myself using this space several times daily for mundane tasks such as food preparation. I wanted to include something that will make me smile each time I go in there, so voila. Wallpaper adds drama and personality to a blank wall and doesn’t need to be expensive when used in a small space.
