I have recently returned from a whirlwind week in New York. My husband had to go there for work and I was lucky enough to tag along (without kids) :). It is such an inspiring city in so many ways, but I really love seeing the homewares, decor and furnishings. Being a shopping mecca and having so many brands’ flagship stores means the visual merchandising is usually a sight-seeing feast in itself. My week revolved around visiting a long list of beautiful and inspiring stores and design centres. I thought I would share my ‘go-to’ places for anyone who is heading to the Big Apple with a similar interest.
Apart from their wide and varied clothing range, they stock some beautiful homewares and candles. I always manage to find space in my carry on luggage for a pretty ceramic or two!
Another one of my favourites, Restoration Hardware has a huge 3 level showroom in the Flatiron Building.
For bathroom inspiration, the Waterworks showroom is definitely worth a visit.
They also have a kitchen showroom. I fell in love with this green cabinetry and double sink.
For inexpensive home decorating fabrics in colourful plains and geometrics, Mood Fabrics is definitely worth a visit.
Around the corner is a treasure trove of trim and braids, at a fraction of the price.
Pottery Barn/West Elm/Williams Sonoma
I know we now have these stores here, but the Easter displays were too good not to include.
(Pottery Barn)
(Williams Sonoma)
This 6 level warehouse features an eclectic mix of furniture and beautiful decor. Including Madeleine Weinrib rugs…
John Robshaw soft furnishings….
and Kate Spade furniture.
Other places on my list:
To The Trade only.
Manhattan is a hub for Designers and Decorators with two incredible buildings showcasing hundreds of brands all under the one roof.
The DD Building has 18 levels (where I managed to spend an entire day!) that I could only describe as a ‘mecca’. It houses over 3000 fabric and furniture brands in 130 showrooms. Unfortunately this building is trade only but here is a taste of what’s inside…..
Brunschwig and Fils showroom.
Rows and rows of large fabric samples.
Wallpaper and soft furnishings are also displayed.
Seating for designers and their clients is on display, upholstered in their fabrics.
Osborne and Little was one of my favourite showrooms.
Kravet. So much inspiration!
Christopher Peacock. This showroom was definitely a stand out and featured some beautiful examples of their high quality joinery.
Where can I use this wallpaper?!
Plenty of samples on hand too.
A gorgeous chair in the Schumacher showroom.
An amazing range of Christopher Spitzmiller lamp bases.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time to get to the New York Design Centre this trip. It is a 16 storey building housing all the top furnishing brands.
Here is a photo of one of my favourite showrooms from a previous visit.
Around the corner from the DD Building, this store has a vast collection of braids, trims and beautiful passementerie.
There is so much to see and I hope my Decorators Guide to New York has inspired you to visit this vibrant city, or added some places to your ‘must visit’ list. If you have any other additions, I would love to hear of them.
